A series of black & white Xerox collages, Uddin & Elsey 2002
We can be seen appropriating the actions of the students during the era of social unrest in Europe of 1968. We have engaged in this revolutionary time by ‘cutting and pasting’ ourselves amongst these politically charged events positioning ourselves as participants, activists and spectators.
In Paris May ’68, we occupy the Sorbonne, hang out banners and back the strikes. In Prague we sit amongst the crowds in Wenceslas Square and march against the Soviet tanks that invaded and occupied the city as a result of the Prague Spring. Echoing Situationist gestures and other collaborative actions we alter and subvert the history books. We appear to chase after the myth of revolution by re-constructing these past events. This work has been shown at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art and included in Art Monthly and ArtForum magazines.
