Graphic novel – work in progress – In 2013 I returned to the suburb of Husby, Stockholm to talk to mostly, local young people, following the police killing of a resident on one of the estates. Filming Interviews about what had caused the unrest which led to vandalism or ‘rioting’. They described the neighbourhood they lived in, and talked about how it was being perceived by people who had never visited.
The events sparked international interest and negatively depicted this mostly migrant community. President Trump also took the opportunity to comment by blaming Sweden’s immigration policies. Other Swedish cities began to see similar responses, perhaps in solidarity, or anger at the authorities handling of the incident. These images are the start of a graphic novel where young people tell the story from their perspective. On film they start to describe their local area and as they talk about these events what unfolds is the inequality and systemic racism they are accustomed to experiencing.
